10 Tips on how I do it.

As I was gathering my thoughts on writing my next post, a familiar sound came to my attention. Text message just came in. I was asked to design a banner to be used for announcing the school’s enrollment.

So I quickly got my pen and paper and started sketching ideas that would immediately come to mind. And “tada”! Just made a mockup banner. Saved it to jpeg format then sent the design through email for approval.

Lately, a lot of my time is being spent on designing, researching and upgrading my knowledge to the craft that I pursue. These things are very tiresome and make me consume a lot of coffee to keep me up and running. Sometimes, you just ran out of ideas and immediately look for inspiration to finish your work. Through time, I’ve managed to keep afloat and come up with ideas that I never thought of and at the end of the day be just amazed of the output.

I like to share to you how I generally go about it:

1.    I keep a scrap book or folder where I place designs, brochure, flyers, etc. for future use or inspiration.

2.    Before I start designing, I pray for wisdom and ideas on how I would do the whole thing. This thing never fails me. I always get a rush of ideas after praying. A technique that my former boss taught me.

3.    When I design, I keep reminding myself that it doesn’t matter if I like it. All that matters if the client likes it. There are times that I don’t like what I’ve design but the clients liked it.

4.    As much as possible, keep the design simple and use two fonts.

5.    The layout of my designs are always based and patterned to the paintings of Piet Mondrian.

6.     I always keep stock photos in handy and make sure they’re not copyrighted.

7.    Try to observe how different designs are laid out. Then try combining it.

8.    Colors play a big role in designing. Try to learn complementing colors, gradients and equivalent contrasts.

9.    Always have a theme in mind.

10.  After the whole project, make a back up and save it to a disk.

I tend to slack off too long until the idea hits me “Smack right in the middle!”

Try hooking up to an IV for coffee.

It’s more practical and you don’t get to use too many paper cups.
