I’ve been using powerpoint a lot in my speaking engagements. I use videos in mpeg format and inserted mp3 for the music. In a way, I have used powerpoint & multimedia to present it in an edutainment way, meaning, learning while having fun kind of presentation. One of the greatest resources you can use are videos in youtube. But a lot of powerpoint users have a hard time running flv’s in powerpoint. Some say, it’s impossible. So how do we do it?
What is a flv video?
Flash Video, also known as flv, is a file format that is used to deliver video over the Internet. It uses the .flv file extension. Video sharing sites such as YouTube and MySpace make use of Flash Video format. There are several programs which allow you to view Flash Video. One example is VLC Media Player, which is free and can be downloaded at http://www.videolan.org.

How to insert a flv video into your powerpoint prestentation.
1. Install a VLC Media Player in your computer.
2. Once done, create a folder where you will put your ppt and flv file.
3. Move the presentation and flv video to the folder you created.
4. Open your powerpoint presentaion.
5. Go to the slide which you want to have the flash video (flv) inserted.

6. Right click on the tool bar and click “customize quick access toolbar”

7. Click “Popular” and tick the box that indicates, “Show Developer tab in the ribbon” then click ok.

8. Click on the Developer tool bar and click on the icon “more controls“.

9. Scroll right to the bottom and look for VideoLAN VLC ActiveX Plugin (both v1 and v2 is fine).
10. Click Ok.

11. Right click on the control that has been added, select Properties. This will bring up the properties dialog box.

12. Under MRL, enter the filename (e.g. video.flv). Once done, close the dialog box.

13. Adjust the size of the inserted flv object to your preferred size.

14. Now, just click the Slide Show button and your ready to show your flv on powerpoint.

This is excellent. One tip that I encountered is that you will have to also save the PowerPoint 2007 file as a Macro-Enabled presentation for it to work (at least I had to do so). This can be done by choosing Save As (in PPT 2007) and select the “Save As Type” pulldown and select the PowerPoint Macro-Enabled Presentation and the new file extension for the PowerPoint file will be .pptm
